Skyscapes: Northern Lights

The Northern Lights, also referred to as an 'Aurora' (a Latin word meaning"sunrise" or the Roman goddess of dawn), is a spectacular naturally occurring light display in the sky.

The Aurora is caused by the collision of solar wind and magnetospheric charged particles with the high altitude atmosphere (aka the 'thermosphere').

The Aurora appears in the northern horizon as a greenish glow or sometimes a faint red. Discrete auroras often display magnetic field lines or curtain-like structures, and can change within seconds or glow unchanging for hours, most often in fluorescent green.

I have been fortunate to witness the Northern Lights a number of times, and each event is unlike the other. When the sky fills with dancing light it is life-changing and a beauty beyond words. Please enjoy exploring this collection.
